Canvas is the editor in the right-hand panel of a project. It's where the documents you and Yori write take shape: you can edit them directly, ask Yori to change part of them, compare versions and export the result.

Open a document in Canvas

A document opens in Canvas when you:

  • select it in Project documents in the sidebar
  • choose it from the Files tab in the right-hand panel
  • press ⌘ + P (Ctrl + P on Windows) in the panel and search for it
  • ask Yori to write or edit it. Canvas opens on its own so you can watch the changes arrive.

Each open document gets a tab at the top of the panel. Select a tab to switch documents. To close one, use its close button, middle-click it, or right-click it for Close, Close others, Close to the right and Close all.

If you close the panel, select Reopen canvas in the chat's top bar to bring it back. Hide right panel and Show right panel hide or show the whole panel.

Kinds of document

Kind How it looks Copy and export
Text document A formatted document with headings, lists, links and tables. Copy markdown. Export as Markdown, PDF or Word.
Spreadsheet (.csv) A grid of rows and columns. Copy CSV. Export as CSV.
Code A code editor. Copy code. Export as Source.

Most documents are text documents. Text documents can also show maths formulas and simple charts or diagrams when Yori includes them.

Edit a text document

Click into the document and type. A formatting toolbar sits above the text:

Control Shortcut on Mac Shortcut on Windows
Block type: Paragraph or Heading 1 to Heading 6
Bold ⌘ + B Ctrl + B
Italic ⌘ + I Ctrl + I
Strikethrough ⌘ + ⇧ + X Ctrl + Shift + X
Inline code
Add link or Edit link ⌘ + K Ctrl + K
Lists and indentation: Bulleted list, Numbered list, Outdent list, Indent list ⌘ + ⇧ + 8 for bullets, ⌘ + ⇧ + 7 for numbers Ctrl + Shift + 8, Ctrl + Shift + 7
Blockquote, Code block, Horizontal rule
Insert table, Delete table
Undo ⌘ + Z Ctrl + Z
Redo ⌘ + ⇧ + Z Ctrl + Shift + Z

When you select text, a small toolbar appears with Ask Yori, Bold, Italic, Inline code and a text style menu.

To add a link, select Add link, paste the address into Link URL and confirm. On an existing link you can Open link, Edit link or Remove link. To delete a table, place your cursor inside it first.

While Yori is writing into a document, the status reads Generating… and you can't type in it. Editing opens again when Yori finishes.

Ask Yori about a passage

You can mark several passages with what should change, then send them all to Yori in one message.

  1. Select the text you want to change.
  2. Select Ask Yori in the selection toolbar. A box opens under the text.
  3. Type what should change, for example "Make this shorter and warmer".
  4. Select Add change or press Enter. The text gets a numbered mark, and a card with your note appears beside it.
  5. Repeat for each passage. A bar at the bottom of the document counts the changes, for example 3 changes ready.
  6. Select Send to Yori in the bar. Yori gets one message with every change, in reading order.

To send straight away, select Send in the box, or Send all 3 when other changes are waiting. You can also press Cmd Enter on a Mac or Ctrl Enter on Windows.

In the box What it does
Enter Adds the change.
Shift Enter Starts a new line.
Esc Closes the box without adding anything.
Clicking elsewhere Adds the change if you typed something.

Each card has Edit and Remove. Selecting a card scrolls to its text. Selecting Ask Yori on text that's already part of a change opens that change, so you can edit it. If you delete the marked text, its card shows Text removed and the change isn't sent. Remove and Clear in the bar show Undo for a few seconds.

Select the count in the bar to see every change before sending, and to add a note in Anything else for Yori? Optional.

While Yori works, the bar reads Yori is making 3 changes and offers Stop. When Yori finishes it reads 3 changes made, with View changes to compare the new version. If you stop Yori or the message can't be sent, your changes stay on the document so you can send them again. If Yori is busy with another message, the bar reads Sends when Yori finishes.

Changes you haven't sent stay on the document if you reload the page. If you type in the message box while changes are waiting, a line above it says they'll go with your message. Select the cross on that line to keep them on the document instead.

In the chat, your changes appear as one message, for example 3 changes to Spring launch email. Select a change to jump to its text in the document, or select its quote to read it in full.

Quick actions

A floating action bar sits at the bottom right of the document.

For text documents:

  • Add final polish: Yori checks grammar, adds section headings where they help and smooths the flow. You can type your own instruction in What should Yori polish? before sending.
  • Request suggestions: Yori adds suggestions to improve the writing.
  • View changes: highlights what changed in Yori's latest edit. If there's nothing to compare yet, you'll see No changes to compare.
  • Add table and Delete table.
  • Close: closes the document.

For spreadsheets you'll see Format and clean data and Analyze and visualize data. For code you'll see Run, Add comments, Add logs and, after an error, Fix error.

These actions send a request to Yori in the chat, so they use credits like any other message.

Suggestions from Yori

When Yori suggests edits rather than making them, the suggested passages are highlighted in the document. Select one to see it in a card marked Suggested, then choose Apply to accept it or Dismiss to ignore it. Use Previous suggestion and Next suggestion to step through them.

Save and review changes

Canvas saves your edits automatically as you type. There is no save button. Instead, keep an eye on the on-screen save state, which you can see in Document details (the i button in the document's tab bar) under Status:

Status Meaning
Saved Everything is saved.
Saving… Your latest edits are being saved.
Updating… Yori's latest changes are arriving.
Sync delayed Saving is taking longer than usual.
Save failed The last save didn't work.
Update conflict The document changed somewhere else at the same time.

Document details also shows the Words count for text, Rows for spreadsheets and Lines for code.

Wait for Saved before you close the project or your browser. If saving is stuck, a bar above the document says "Your latest changes haven't synced yet." Select Retry.

If the document changed somewhere else while you were editing, a bar says "This document changed somewhere else. Choose which version to keep." Choose Keep my version or Load latest version.

Version history

Yori keeps a version each time a document's content is saved, whether you or Yori made the change.

  1. Select Document history (the clock button) in the document's tab bar.
  2. The History window lists Versions down the side. Each one shows its number, title, time and who made it: Yori or You.
  3. Select a version to compare it with the current document. Changed sections are marked, and Show a number unchanged reveals the sections that stayed the same.
  4. To reuse part of an old version, select Copy section from selected version next to that section.
  5. To go back completely, select Restore this version.

Restoring saves the old content as a new version, so you can always move forward again. If there are no versions yet, the window says No versions yet.

Copy and export

The buttons in the document's tab bar let you take your work elsewhere:

  • Copy markdown (or Copy CSV, Copy code) copies the whole document.
  • The download button opens the export menu.

For text documents, the menu is called Export document and offers Markdown, PDF and Word. If the project's main Brand Profile has a visual identity, the menu is called Export branded document, and PDF and Word files use that brand's logo, colour and fonts. While the branding loads, the menu reads Loading export branding and only Markdown is available.

Spreadsheets export as CSV and code exports as Source.

If an export fails, you'll see "Couldn't export PDF" or "Couldn't export Word document". Try again, or export as Markdown.

To download a whole folder, use Export as ZIP in Project documents. See Project files and imports.

Review against your brand

Text documents in a project show a Review against brand and audience button in the tab bar, whether you open them from Project documents or from the chat. Yori scores the document for Voice and Audience against the project's Brand Profile and Audience, rates it On brand, Close or Needs work, and adds suggestions you can apply or dismiss. Select Run again after making changes.

Brand review is for copy your audience will read, such as emails, posts, ads and web pages. If the document is an internal plan or brief, Yori says so instead of scoring it.

Each review uses credits, like other AI work.
