Project files and imports

Create, import, organise and export the documents and folders that belong to a project.

Every project has its own set of documents and folders. Yori can read and write them during a chat, and you can open any of them in Canvas. Import your briefs, reports and reference material here so Yori can work from them.

Where files live

Project documents appear in the Project documents section of the sidebar whenever a project is open. They belong to that project only. Other projects, and other people in your workspace, can't see them.

You'll find three kinds of item:

  • Documents you create, Yori writes, or you import. These open in Canvas.
  • Folders to organise documents.
  • Documents that are being written. While Yori writes a document, its row shows a Writing indicator.

The Project documents toolbar

Below the Chats | Files switch is a row of buttons. Search documents is on the left; the rest are on the right:

Button What it does
Search documents Opens a search field in place of the buttons. Matching documents replace the file tree as you type.
Import documents Opens the import window. While an import runs, the tooltip shows its progress: Preparing, Uploading or Processing.
Create document Adds a new document. Type a name and press Enter.
Create folder Adds a new folder. Type a name and press Enter.
More file actions (...) Opens Refresh, which reloads the list, and Collapse folders, which closes every open folder. Refresh reads Saving changes while a change is being saved.

Search documents

Press ⌘ + Shift + F (Ctrl + Shift + F on Windows) from anywhere in the project to open document search. Yori shows Files and opens the sidebar first if needed.

  • Each result shows the folder it is in.
  • The first result is marked with ↵. Press Enter to open it.
  • Press ↓ to move into the results and ↑ to go back to the search field.
  • If nothing matches, select Clear search to start again.
  • Press Esc once to clear what you typed, and again to close the search and get the file tree back.

If the project is empty, you'll see No documents yet with the hint "Create a document or folder, or drop files here to import them." and the buttons Document, Folder and Import.

Create documents and folders

  1. Select Create document or Create folder. To create one inside a folder, open the folder's menu and choose New document or New folder.
  2. Type a name in Document name or Folder name.
  3. Press Enter to create it, or Esc to cancel.

Select a new document to open it in Canvas and start writing. If an item with the same name already exists in that place, you'll see "Something with that name is already here."

You can also ask Yori in chat to create or update documents for you. They appear in the list as Yori writes them.

Import files

Importing turns your files into editable documents inside the project.

  1. Select Import documents in the toolbar, type / in the message box and choose Import documents, or drop files onto the project sidebar. If Chats is showing, the sidebar switches to Files while you drag.
  2. In Import documents, choose your files or drag them into the window.
  3. Select Import followed by the number of documents.

While the import runs, a progress card at the top of Files shows how far it has got, and you can keep working anywhere in Yori. From Chats, a small spinner on Files shows that an import is running. One import runs at a time. When it finishes, Yori confirms how many documents it imported.

Yori converts each file into an editable document. Files you drop on a folder, or on a document inside a folder, go into that folder, which lights up while you drag. Everything else goes into a folder called uploads. The document keeps the original file name. If a document with that name already exists, Yori adds a number to the new one.

Supported files and size limits

The import window shows the limits that apply to your workspace. The largest sizes Yori accepts are:

File type Extensions Largest size per file
Text and data .md, .txt, .csv, .json, .yml, .yaml 100 MB
PDF .pdf 30 MB
PowerPoint .pptx 20 MB
Word, web pages, spreadsheets and other documents .doc, .docx, .html, .htm, .xls, .xlsx, .odt, .rtf 50 MB

You can import several files at once. The import window tells you how many. Images can't be imported as project documents. To work with images, use Image and video.

If an import fails

If some files import and others don't, Yori tells you how many worked and lists the ones that didn't, with a reason for each:

  • "This document is too large for Yori to read. Try splitting it into smaller documents or reducing its size."
  • "Yori took too long to read this document. Try again, or use a smaller document."
  • "Something stopped this document from importing. Try again."

Check the file type and size, then try again.

Organise documents

Open an item's menu with its ... button (Actions for the item), or right-click it.

Action Documents Folders

New document, New folder Creates one inside this folder.
Rename (F2) Yes Yes
Duplicate Makes a copy.

Copy path Copies its location in the project.
Export as ZIP Downloads the folder and its contents as a ZIP file.
Delete Yes Yes

Right-clicking empty space in the list gives New document, New folder and Import documents.

You can also drag documents and folders onto a folder to move them.

Select several items

  • ⌘-click (Ctrl-click on Windows) to add or remove items one at a time.
  • Shift-click to select a range.
  • ⌘ + A (Ctrl + A) selects every visible item.

With several items selected, the menu offers Move a number of items to and Delete a number of items.

Keyboard navigation

Keys Action

Home and End Jump to the first or last item.
→ and ← Open or close a folder.
Enter or Space Open the item.

⌘ + Backspace (Delete on Windows) Delete.
Esc Clear the selection.

Delete documents and folders

  1. Choose Delete from the item's menu, or press the delete shortcut.
  2. Confirm with Delete document, Delete folder or Delete items.

Deleting a folder deletes everything inside it. Deleting can't be undone. If you might need something later, export it first.

If a document is still saving, you'll see "This document is still syncing. Try again in a moment."

Use files in a chat

Type @ in the message box and choose a document to point Yori at it. Yori can also search and read the project's documents on its own when your request needs them. See Project chat and messages.
